How Traditional Products Work

Your culture's strongest production choices are about combinations, not simply filling every available slot. Traditional Products let you choose the industries a culture specializes in, provided that culture has actually led their production. This County of Fortune traditional products guide explains the reworked demo system described in the October 28 developer diary.

Cultures no longer divide the entire product catalog among themselves and grant bonuses to everything assigned to them. The replacement uses six Traditional Product slots per culture, with two slots unlocked at each new Renown level starting at Renown level 2. The announcement describes a six-slot system; it does not establish an unlimited sequence of additional slots beyond that structure.

You choose which eligible products become traditional. There is one important qualification: the culture must have been the largest producer of that product during the preceding 12 months. A product being valuable to your county does not, by itself, make it eligible for every culture.

Choose Products Your Economy Can Support

Start with the industries that matter to your current economy. The developers explicitly say that choosing useful products still provides worthwhile bonuses even if you do not optimize every possible synergy.

A practical selection process is:

  1. Identify an industry you want the culture to support.
  2. Check whether that culture meets the previous-12-month production requirement.
  3. Compare eligible products against the culture's traits.
  4. Consider whether another selected product can form a supported pair.
  5. Revisit the choices as the county's production changes.

This approach keeps eligibility and usefulness separate. A profitable production chain may be a good long-term specialization, but the historical production condition still governs whether its products can be selected now.

Traditional Products can be changed later. You do not have to predict your entire late-game economy before making the first choice, and the official explanation does not describe the initial selection as permanent.

Use Culture Traits to Build Product Pairs

The individual production bonus from a Traditional Product is deliberately modest. The more interesting gains come from Culture Traits linking pairs of Traditional Products.

The developers give two examples of these relationships:

Trait relationshipWhat to look for when choosing products
Ingredients in the same recipeTwo eligible products used together in a recipe
Beginning and end of a production chainAn eligible upstream product and a downstream product linked by the chain

These examples explain the kind of connection to look for; they are not a universal bonus that every culture automatically has. Read the actual trait before choosing a pair. Selecting two important products can still help your economy, but a specific synergy depends on the corresponding Culture Trait.

Production-chain relationships therefore matter when you choose a specialization. Consider the pair as part of the industry you already supply, rather than assuming any two Traditional Products will amplify each other.

Account for Regional Population Share

A culture's population share affects the strength of its Traditional Product bonuses in each region. The October 28 developer diary gives this example: when a culture represents more than 75% of a region's population, its Traditional Product bonuses there are doubled.

That is a regional example, not a statement that choosing a product doubles production everywhere in the county. Check where the culture is present before judging how much a specialization will help a particular region.

An older September announcement gave a 2.5-times example for the same threshold. This guide follows the newer October 28 explanation, which says two times. Use the current game's displayed values when evaluating a save rather than combining the two figures.

The official County of Fortune developer updates on Steam contain the full culture rework and the later explanation of its bonuses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make any product traditional for any culture?

No. The culture must have been that product's largest producer during the previous 12 months. Choose among products that satisfy that condition.

How are Traditional Product slots unlocked?

The announced system has six slots per culture. Starting at Renown level 2, each new Renown level unlocks two slots. Do not interpret this as a confirmed unlimited slot expansion.

Are Traditional Products permanent?

No. The developers say you can change them later, allowing you to adapt cultural specialization as the county develops.

Do I need perfect synergies to get a useful bonus?

No. The developers say products important to your economy remain useful choices without carefully optimizing every synergy. Trait-based pairs are an additional consideration when you want to refine those choices.
