Why Product Pairs Matter

Two related products can do more for a cultural specialization than two unrelated selections. County of Fortune culture traits and synergies now revolve around pairs of Traditional Products, giving you a reason to examine recipes and production chains together. The useful question is which relationship your culture's actual trait rewards.

The culture rework replaced the previous traits with ones directly connected to Traditional Products. Individual Traditional Product bonuses are intentionally fairly small; the stronger interactions come from the pair-based synergies created by those new traits.

This is not a system where every product assigned to a culture receives the same broad treatment. The rework concentrates specialization into selected Traditional Products, so your choices can reflect a particular industry or a connected part of the economy.

The Two Synergy Examples Explained

The developer explanation provides two clear examples. One trait increases a bonus when two Traditional Products are ingredients in the same recipe. Another connects products at the beginning and end of the same production chain.

Example from the developersHow to evaluate a possible pairing
Shared recipe ingredientsCheck whether both selected products are ingredients in the same recipe
Production-chain endpointsCheck whether the selected products belong to the beginning and end of one chain

These are examples of different Culture Traits, not a claim that every culture has both effects. Match a proposed pair to the trait the culture actually has. A connection that sounds sensible economically is not enough to establish a particular synergy if the trait does not reward it.

The production chain also gives you a useful way to think about the choice: is the culture supporting a single industry from input to output, or helping supply ingredients used together? Both relationships are described, but the relevant trait determines which one applies.

Check Eligibility Before Planning a Pair

Traditional Products have a production-history requirement. The culture must have been the largest producer of a product during the preceding 12 months before you can select it as traditional.

That restriction applies when you are considering a pair as well. You might identify two products that fit a trait, yet still need to establish the appropriate cultural production history before both are eligible.

The announced structure has six Traditional Product slots per culture. Starting with Renown level 2, each new Renown level unlocks two slots. This describes the unlocking of the stated product-slot structure; it does not establish an endless supply of extra slots.

For a practical review:

  • Start with a culture's actual trait.
  • Identify the product relationship it rewards.
  • Check the previous-12-month eligibility of each product.
  • Prefer a useful eligible pairing that fits the economy you are building.
  • Reconsider the choice later if your production priorities change.

You can change Traditional Products later. There is room to adapt instead of treating the first specialization as an irreversible commitment.

Population Share Changes the Regional Benefit

Culture Traits describe relationships between products, while cultural population share affects how strongly Traditional Product bonuses apply within a region. These are related decisions, but they answer different questions: what should the culture specialize in, and where will that specialization have the strongest local effect?

The October 28 developer diary says that a culture representing more than 75% of a region's population receives double its Traditional Product bonuses in that region. Earlier September material used a 2.5-times example. The later October explanation is the basis for the two-times figure here.

The developers also emphasize that perfect optimization is optional. Choosing products important to your economy still gives useful bonuses, even when you are not squeezing every possible percentage from the available synergies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all cultures automatically get both synergy types?

The developers present shared-recipe ingredients and chain endpoints as examples of Culture Traits. Check the culture's actual trait instead of assuming both effects always apply.

Can I choose a pair before producing either product?

Each selected Traditional Product must satisfy the rule that its culture was the largest producer over the previous 12 months. A desired pairing does not bypass eligibility.

Is the population bonus county-wide?

The described multiplier depends on a culture's population share in a region. The October example doubles the Traditional Product bonuses there when its share is greater than 75%.

Must I optimize cultural synergies to develop my county?

No. The developers explicitly describe useful bonuses from simply choosing products important to your economy. Synergy planning helps refine that specialization rather than making every unoptimized choice worthless.
